DANISH ‘KONKRETE’ ART ON SHOW
Rocket Gallery presents a survey show of Danish geometrical painting from between 1950 and 2000.
Danish ‘Konkret’ (or ‘Concrete’) art is a less rigid genre than its German or Swiss counterparts. In Denmark ‘Konkret’ is used as a term to describe geometrically-based art – meaning that it is neither figurative nor Cobra expressionistic abstraction.
In the year in which the sixtieth anniversary of Cobra Art is celebrated, Rocket Gallery presents a direct contrast in style with artists from the lesser known ‘Konkret’ movement.
The Danish ‘Konkret’ artists have never been as widely acknowledged as their Cobra colleagues, so this show offers a reevaluation of their distinct form of abstraction which finds many echoes in Danish design and architecture.
Paintings from all decades are included in this exhibition. The exhibition will also hint at the breadth of work produced within this genre by showing screenprints, sculpture, weavings and furniture.
Additionally, original catalogues, photographs by Keld Helmer-Petersen, and ephemera from the artists featured will illuminate our understanding of this significant but overlooked Danish art movement.
Paintings from five decades are represented here, and among the exhibited artists are Richard Mortensen, Ib Geertsen and Leo Arnak Pedersen.
