HAMLETZAR: A JOURNEY

For the second year running, Zabludowicz Collection and Art Project in London presents a month filled with a variety of performance, education and screening events. Among the many contributions will be the art constellation HamletZar.

HamletZar is an international performance project running from 2008 to 2011. In addition to a performance, it includes a documentary, music and a book devoted to research and performance techniques developed through a series of residencies and seminars. Fusing Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the Middle Eastern Zar ceremony, HamletZar explores issues of immigration and citizenship, and their relation to personal and political identity.

HamletZar began its journey in 2008 and will be created through a process of international residencies held from June 2009-November 2010, including a conference at Barbican Centre this February.

The residencies will be hosted by Goossun Art-illery’s international partners and unite artists from around the world to deeply explore issues and techniques of the performance with access to master practitioners, reference groups (including refugees and migrants), and varied cultural environments. In addition to creating the HamletZar performance, the residencies emphasize performer training, professional exchange and the creation of a network of like-minded artists.
