IB GEERTSEN HEADED FOR LONDON

Iconic artist Ib Geertsen turns 90 and celebrates in style at Rocket Gallery

In 2008 a few of Geertsen's works were exhibited in the Danish Konkrete group show at Rocket Gallery in London. Now Rocket has assembled a whole exhibition dedicated to the artist, including mobiles, paintings, screenprints and furniture. At the time of the show, Mr Geertsen will have just turned 90.

Despite his late UK solo debut, Geertsen is by no means new in business. Ib Geertsen is practically a father figure within Denmark's artistic community. His first prominent appearance on the art scene came in 1947 with the exhibition, Linien II, forerunner of the Danish Konkrete Movement. Generations of Danes have grown up with his colourful formalism exhibited in museums and public spaces throughout Scandinavia.

Danish 'konkret' (or 'concrete') art is a less rigid genre than its German or Swiss counterparts. In Denmark 'Konkret' is used as a term to describe geometrically-based art - meaning that it is neither figurative nor Cobra expressionistic abstraction.

lb Geertsen is widely known as one of the leading exponents of 'konkret' art in post‑war Denmark. His well‑deserved reputation in this connection is due to his pioneering work both as painter and sculptor. Geertsen has especially demonstrated his strength in the sculptural field, which is where he has experimented most vigorously and produced his most remarkable works.
